Weston Spirit
Weston Spirit is a national youth organisation which aims to tackle issues of social exclusion in young people through a range of personal development programmes and projects.
Co-founded in 1988 by Falklands War veteran Simon Weston OBE, Weston Spirit works directly with young people aged between 13-25, delivering potentially 'life-changing' programmes designed to develop confidence and self-esteem, whilst providing an opportunity to learn new skills.
It has 11 centres throughout England and Wales - including a centre in Greater Manchester at Haletop House in Wythenshawe - a dedicated regional manager based in Northern Ireland and it provides out-reach support throughout the UK.
To date, it has worked with more than 60,000 young people around the country. Shop Direct Home Shopping Limited has helped fund Weston Spirit's 'School Challenge Days' programme, where over 200 Year 10 and 11 pupils in Oldham take part in a new development scheme.
'School Challenge Days' have been running in four secondary schools across Oldham - at Kaskenmoor, Saddleworth, North Chadderton and Counthill School. Designed to help increase motivation and nurture a sense of team spirit and school pride, the days provide pupils with a unique opportunity to take part in a range of activities aimed at developing confidence, self-awareness and key skills. The pupils also get the chance to win 'on the spot' prizes, which are awarded to groups who demonstrate excellent teamwork, communication, effort and motivation.
