Giving something back to the places where we live and work has always been important to Shop Direct. We continue to play a positive role in our local communities through our charity programme.
As part of this commitment, we ask our colleagues to vote each year to choose the one charitable project that we will get behind as a team. In 2015, our colleagues voted to support Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and we’ve been working with the team there to develop a groundbreaking digital hospital app. We’ve also set ourselves a fundraising target of £200k and are set to hit that very soon.
Digital Alder Hey
Alder Hey is a charity close to many of our hearts. And with our fundraising and the benefit of our digital expertise, we’ll help to build a world-first digital hospital app. It’ll initially be available to oncology patients, reaching over 4,500 children and their families in the first year. From year two, it’ll be available to 270,000 children and their families. It’s going to be a game-changing new approach to hospital and patient interaction.
We’re working together as one Shop Direct team to raise £200k to build the app for Alder Hey. An app that will allow the hospital to communicate with patients in a way they understand and that helps to put them at ease.
- Familiarisation through Digital Hospital Ward – allows children to take a virtual tour of the hospital and the room they will be staying in prior to admission. This will give the children control and make their visit a lot less scary.
- Distraction via games – that can be played before, during or after their stay.
- Rewards – children will be sent push notification virtual badges when they have completed a treatment.
- Hospital information – all the FAQs relevant to that patient, along with maps of the hospital, contact details, and so on.
Colleagues are encouraged to take an active role in their local communities and to support charities that are close to their hearts. They can do this through fundraising, donating or volunteering.
Colleagues take part in lots of fundraising activities every year, including cake sales, sporting challenges and fun days. Shop Direct boosts any funds raised through ‘Helping Hand,’ our matched giving scheme. In the last few years, our joint contribution to charity has been over £500,000.
Colleagues can also choose to donate to good causes via payroll giving and we recently received a Gold Standard award as recognition of our commitment in this area.
Colleagues from across Shop Direct are given opportunities to volunteer their time and expertise to charities and community groups.
